Timberwolves knock off Pistons for second time in four days

Karl-Anthony Towns had 24 points and 12 rebounds and the host Minnesota Timberwolves extended their winning streak to four games by topping the Detroit Pistons for the second time in four days, 118-105, on Sunday afternoon.

D'Angelo Russell, who missed the previous four games with a shin contusion, contributed 22 points and eight assists and Malik Beasley supplied 20 points off the bench. Anthony Edwards added 17 points and five assists and Jaden McDaniels tossed in 13 points for the Timberwolves, who won 128-117 in Detroit on Thursday.

Saddiq Bey led Detroit with 24 points and eight rebounds. Trey Lyles had 16 points and seven rebounds, Cory Joseph added 15 points and Hamidou Diallo chipped in 11. The Pistons have lost four straight and eight of their last nine games.

Pistons rookie guard Cade Cunningham missed his third straight game duo to a right hip pointer.

Minnesota shot 46.2 percent from the field, while Detroit shot 42.1 percent. The Timberwolves, who outscored the Pistons 63-49 in the second half, had a 20-11 advantage in fast-break points.

Lyles scored 12 first-half points and the Pistons led 56-55 at the break. Towns led the Timberwolves with 14 as neither club held a lead bigger than seven points.

Minnesota changed that by scoring the first nine points of the second half, including four from Towns. Detroit came back with a 9-0 run of its own that began with a Joseph 3-pointer.

Beasley scored five points in the final two minutes of the quarter as Minnesota carried an 83-79 lead into the fourth.

Russell made two layups 31 seconds apart to give the Timberwolves a 95-88 advantage. McDaniels then knocked down two 3-pointers in a 25-second span to stretch the lead to 13 points.

The Pistons scored the next six points but Towns knocked down a 3-pointer after a timeout. Bey hit two 3-pointers in a 29-second span to cut the Timberwolves lead to 107-102. Russell made three free throws with 2:02 left to make it 112-102 and the Pistons never threatened again.
