Nuggets and Wizards trade their guards in a four players trade

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Denver Nuggets are trading Monte Morris and Will Barton to the Washington Wizards in a deal for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith.

The trade puts the Nuggets under the luxury tax by $3.9M, which gives them the full Mid-level exception to use in the free agency that starts tomorrow.

All four players involved in the trade are key contributors to their teams. Three of them averaged double digits in points.

Monte Morris spent all of his five seasons in the NBA with the Nuggets. Last season he averaged 12.6 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game.

Nuggets starting shooting guard Will Barton in his 12-year NBA career spent his last eight seasons with the Nuggets. Last season Barton averaged 14.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game.

Wizards guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope spent only one season with the Wizards, but played four years for Los Angeles Lakers before that, and another four with the Detroit Pistons, where he got drafted in 2013. 29-year-old Caldwell-Pope last season averaged 13.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.

Wizards backup point guard Ish Smith, has also played for the Charlotte Hornets last season until he got traded to the Wizards in February. Smith has averaged 6.3 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game throughout the last season.
