After a fiasco at the 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers and an unsuccessful performance in EuroBasket 2022, the Croatian Basketball Federation decided to take some action.

Earlier in July, the Board of Directors abolished the Expert Council which used to make the critical decisions regarding the national team.

Following the decision, a new position of sports director was created. Former coach and player Aleksandar Petrovic was appointed as the first holder of the position.

As a player, Petrovic won the EuroLeague in 1985 and 1986. Additionally, he guided Croatia to its last medal in international competitions in 1995, where the national team placed third in EuroBasket 1995.

"His rich experience and successes at all levels - playing, coaching, both club and representative are a guarantee of a conscientious and comprehensive approach to future work," the official statement by the Federation reads.
