Spanish Basketball Federation president Jorge Garbajosa will candidate for the presidency of FIBA Europe, according to Jesus Sanchez of Marca. The election will take place on May 20.

Jean-Pierre Siutat, president of the French Basketball Federation, is his main rival for the position.

Garbajosa will have to step down from his current role if he is elected as the FIBA Europe president (has favorite status). He would also have to call elections for the top Spanish Federation post within a maximum period of three months.

Elisa Aguilar, the current competition director of the Spanish Federation and former Spanish women's basketball player, is the main candidate to replace Garbajosa in the case of his success in May. Garbajosa would leave his position in a special period for Spanish basketball, as it celebrates its centenary this year.

Per Jesus Sanchez, Garbajosa would concentrate on modernizing FIBA Europe, bringing it back to the forefront, and regaining the weight it once had in FIBA World.

The 45-year-old legendary Spanish player is known for his diplomatic capabilities, so he would be expected to try to solve the conflict between Dejan Bodiroga's EuroLeague and FIBA.

Siutat earlier said he is aiming to reach the same goal.

"This conflict [between the EuroLeague and FIBA] has lasted far too long. We have very high-quality international and club competitions, but we can't convert them financially. We have to get together for the calendars and show respect for the players and referees. I will put all my energy into it," Garbajosa's opponent told L'Equipe.

The current FIBA Europe president is Turgay Demirel from Turkey.
