Despite leading by 16 points in the third quarter, Serbia got their FIBA EuroBasket 2022 flashbacks. Italy overturned the big deficit and took down Serbia 78-76 to stay alive for the FIBA World Cup 2023 quarterfinals.

Just like a year ago, Italy came back into the game behind its three-point fiesta.

Serbia started the third quarter with an 18-4 run and created a tangible 16-point lead (60-44). However, Simone Fontecchio scored 7 points in a row, while Luigi Datome added a couple of straight threes, and Italy returned to the game before the last tally, being down by just 3 points (59-62). Italy spurted 15-2 to close the third period.

Italy did not stop there and took the lead at the start of the fourth quarter. Gianmarco Pozzecco's team held its advantage and secured the W behind Fontecchio's two-pointer with 33 seconds to play.

Utah Jazz forward Simone Fontecchio had a terrific game for Italy, posting 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Although Bogdan Bogdanovic scored a team-high 18 points for Serbia, the Atlanta Hawks shooting guard made just 4 field goals in 16 attempts. He connected only 1 three-pointer out of 13.
