Germany edge out Mexico after a hard-fought game

The Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Split started with a Germany (1-0) victory over Mexico (0-1) 76-82 (22-19 20-21; 25-22; 9-20). However, the Mexican squad showed from the jump that they were not going to just rollover.

The team from South America won the first quarter 22-19. Germany answered by winning the second one, 21-20. Mexico led by two points at halftime (42-40) and increased its advantage during the third quarter (67-62).

However, the Mexicans ran out of juice in the final quarter. Germany quickly caught up and took the advantage away from Mexico. The European team gained their largest lead of the game towards the end of the fourth quarter (71-80). Mexico scored only nine points in the fourth.

It was a team effort for Germany, as five different players scored in double-digits. Joshiko Saibou led with 17 points, A. Obst added 11, J. Voigtmann contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds. The two NBA talents I. Bonga and M. Wagner scored 13 and 11, respectively.

Paco Cruz and Gustavo Ayon were instrumental in helping Mexico lead most of the game. Cruz scored 30 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished six assists. Ayon added 18 points and 15 rebounds.
