J.J. Barea retires from basketball: 'I need a break from basketball; I'm dead mentally'

J.J. Barea finished his professional career at the age of 38, via El Nuevo Dia.

Barea's last career stop was the Cangrejeros de Santurce club of the professional basketball league Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) in Puerto Rico.

He averaged 14.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 8.0 assists over 26 matches in the first Puerto Rican division this past season.

"I'm calm about finishing. I gave it all. I'm going to take a break from basketball because mentally I'm dead," Barea said.

"I had good experiences and I enjoyed them. I'm glad I had the opportunity to finish my career in Puerto Rico and enjoy the journey with my friends," he added.

The 1.78-meter (5 ft 10 in) floor general spent 11 of his 14 NBA seasons in Dallas. He helped the Mavericks win the NBA championship in 2011.

Barea averaged 8.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists across 831 NBA appearances with the Dallas Mavericks (2006-11, 2014-20) and Minnesota Timberwolves (2011-14).

His single European experience involves a short stint with Movistar Estudiantes in 2021.

J.J. Barea has already tried himself in a coaching position. He was hired by the Mavs as a player development coach.
