The FIBA Basketball World Cup might be returning to Europe.

The Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) announced that it had positive talks with the Italian government about the possibility of making a bid for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2031 hosting rights.

At the moment, it's not specified whether it would be a joint bid with another country or countries or Italy plans to host the biggest basketball event on its own.

Earlier, Italy was given the right to host one of the four groups of Women's EuroBasket 2025.

The last time FIBA World Cup was held in Europe was back in 2014 when Spain was the host country.

Since then, the FIBA World Cup has been hosted in Asia. The 2019 edition was held in China, the 2023 – Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, while Qatar will host the upcoming FIBA World Cup in 2027.
