Dominican Republic hopes Tyson Perez will represent his country despite playing an official game for Spain in the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers.
The Dominican Republic is doing everything it can to have Tyson Perez for the upcoming FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga.
Perez is from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and wants to represent his country, too. However, the 28-year-old has already played for Spain in FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers and FIBA EuroBasket Qualifiers.
Perez must receive permission from FIBA and the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) to play for the Dominican Republic. A few successful cases have been made in the past, including Eric Gordon (Bahamas and USA), Anthony Randolph (Slovenia and USA), and Jose Biriukov (USSR and Spain).

"The issue of Tyson… We love him and we went to meet him and everything. It depends on FIBA," Gigantes quotes the Dominican Republic head coach Nestor Che Garcia.
"He asked for authorization that he wants to change his nationality," Rafael Uribe, Dominican Republic basketball federation president, claimed. "He played for Spain without an asterisk. It is an issue to be discussed. He played with Spain a year and a little bit ago, and that's why FIBA is a little bit reserved. It's not so fast."
Perez played for MoraBanc Andorra, averaging 10.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 14.3 EFF per game in 22 Liga ACB appearances this season.
Greece, Latvia, Puerto Rico, and Spain will be hosting the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, which will be played from July 2 to 7, 2024, in the cities of Piraeus, Riga, San Juan, and Valencia.
Two teams from each group will advance to the semifinal stage. However, only the winners of each FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2024 will claim their ticket to the Olympic Basketball Tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games.
The basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics is scheduled to run from July 27 to August 11.
