EuroLeague is exploring the possibility of expanding to 20 teams for the 2025-26 season, sources tell BasketNews.

The league is considering adding two more clubs to accommodate more teams that align with its vision of stability, continuity, and added value.

This move would help retain organizations from strategically important or growing markets. For example, long-time EuroLeague participant Valencia remains without a permanent spot despite its strong project, history, and upcoming new arena.

Similarly, Paris Basketball was impressive in its debut season this year but risks missing out unless it meets the strict qualification rules for the EuroCup winners.

These rules require it to make the playoffs and finish higher than AS Monaco to secure its place in the following season's edition.

Only six spots are available for non-shareholders, with this season's non-shareholding teams including AS Monaco, Paris Basketball, Crvena Zvezda, Partizan, Virtus Bologna, and ALBA Berlin.

An expansion could lead to discussions on offering more multi-year licenses instead of one-year deals, benefiting clubs like Partizan and Crvena Zvezda.

These clubs have the league's highest attendance and have long sought long-term security.

A 20-team format would also increase the number of regular-season games and double-game weeks from seven to nine.

While this would further tighten an already packed schedule, the EuroLeague would eliminate breaks for FIBA windows in November and February, as relations between the two organizations remain strained.

The last time the EuroLeague expanded was in the 2019-20 season when it went from 16 to 18 teams. The league has long discussed expanding to 20 clubs. Now, that expansion could be coming sooner rather than later.
