Barcelona’s injury woes have sidelined players for a staggering 25+ months combined. Key absences include Juan Nunez and Nico Laprovittola, making Barca the most injury-stricken team in the EuroLeague and ACB.
Juan Nunez has been the latest addition to FC Barcelona's long injury list, as the club announced Tuesday.
The Spanish point guard had arthroscopic surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee, which will keep him out for no less than six months.
That means that he won't play again until early next season.
This is the second major injury to a Barva player this season, following Nicolas Laprovittola's setback last October.
The Argentine tore the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his right knee against Baskonia, resulting in a period of absence of approximately 10 months.
Laprovittola's and Nunez's injuries are the most serious for a Barca player this season, but they're not the only ones.
According to El Mundo Deportivo's Jose Ignacio Huguet, the Blaugrana have accumulated more than two years of sideline problems if we add together all the time their players haven't played or won't play due to physical problems and without counting any potential injuries that may occur between now and June 30.
No other team in the Endesa League or the EuroLeague has had such bad luck with injuries this year.
Only three of Joan Penarroya's players haven't had to miss a game this season: Tomas Satoransky, Willy Hernangomez, and Youssoupha Fall.
11 out of 14 players have missed at least one game at some point.
Player | Injury | Time of absence |
Nicolas Laprovittola | Torn ACL | 10 months |
Juan Nunez | Torn meniscus in right knee | 6 months |
Jan Vesely | Osteochondral injury in right knee/flu | 8-10 weeks/3 weeks |
Chimezie Metu | Left knee sprain | 6 weeks |
Raul Neto | Muscle injuries | 5 weeks |
Joel Parra | Ankle sprain | 4 weeks |
Kevin Punter | Left shoulder | 4 weeks |
Dario Brizuela | Achilles tendon | 3 weeks |
Dame Sarr | Left leg adductor muscle | 3 weeks |
Justin Anderson | Overload/gastroenteritis | 2 weeks/1 week |
Jabari Parker | Left knee bruise | 1 week |
The total injury toll amounts to two years, one month, and three weeks combined.
After Laprovittola and Nunez, the longest sideline is Jan Vesely, who will be sidelined for 8-10 weeks due to an osteochondral injury in the femur of his right knee.
This is in addition to the three weeks he had previously missed, two due to knee discomfort and another due to the flu.
Next up is Chimezie Metu, who was sidelined for nearly six weeks with a sprained left knee.
On the other hand, Jabari Parker has had to miss only one week due to a bruise on his left knee.
