Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving, spoke about the negativity aspect after Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, hoping to maintain the kindness and compassion they have for each other.
Dallas Mavericks All-Star Kyrie Irving, in an interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, addressed the reaction to Luka Doncic’s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, calling for less public criticism of the move.
Irving stressed that beyond the media narratives, the relationships formed behind the scenes were meaningful and extended beyond basketball.
"A big part of our job is navigating the public spotlight, but what people don’t see are the real relationships built behind closed doors—relationships that transcend basketball, coaching, and front-office decisions," Irving said.
Reflecting on his time alongside Doncic, Irving called for understanding and empathy amid the discourse.
"For my own peace of mind—because we spent two years together not just as teammates, but as men—I hope we can step back from the public criticism and focus on the kindness and compassion we have for each other. That’s what’s real, every day—not just in a single moment or a soundbite that can be taken out of context," he added.
Irving spent almost two full seasons with Luka Doncic in Dallas, forming an outstanding backcourt duo with him, which led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last year, for the first time since 2011.
