One of the greatest women basketball players of all time, Diana Taurasi, has announced her retirement after an illustrious 20-season career in the WNBA. The decorated athlete is hanging up her sneakers at the age of 42.
"Mentally and physically, I’m just full," said Taurasi, who spent her entire WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury. "That’s probably the best way to describe it. I’m full and happy."
Taurasi's list of achievements is unparalleled. She retires as the only player in history to win six Olympic gold medals.
With the Mercury, she captured three WNBA championships (2007, 2009, and 2014), earning Finals MVP honors twice. In 2009, she was also named the league’s regular-season MVP.
Before turning pro, Taurasi led her college team to three consecutive NCAA championships (2002-2004). Competing overseas, she dominated the EuroLeague, winning six titles (2007-2010, 2013, 2016).
Taurasi leaves the WNBA as the league’s all-time leading scorer with 10,456 points.
Over the course of her career, she averaged 18.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game across 565 appearances.
Her most dominant statistical season came in 2006, when she averaged 25.3 points per game while shooting 39.7% from three-point range.
Selected first overall by the Mercury in the 2004 WNBA Draft, Taurasi made an immediate impact, earning Rookie of the Year honors.
