Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells suffered a frightening injury during the team’s 124–100 road win over the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday.

The incident occurred late in the second quarter when Wells went up for a two-handed fast break dunk. While converting the play, he was pushed mid-air by Hornets guard K.J. Simpson, causing him to land awkwardly on his right arm and face.

Medical personnel rushed to the scene immediately. Wells lay on the court with a suspected neck injury and was transported out of the arena on a special stretcher.

Following a video review, Simpson was assessed a disqualifying foul for the dangerous play.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Wells is awake, alert, and able to move his extremities after being taken off the court. He has reportedly sustained a broken right wrist and will continue to receive medical attention.

His father, Fred Wells, told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that Jaylen is also experiencing pain in his face, jaw, and back.

Despite the alarming nature of the injury, Wells shared a message on Instagram later that evening, appearing to be in good spirits.

The 21-year-old forward has been a bright spot in his debut season, averaging 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 26 minutes per game.
